Subject: New Rations in Pipeline for Service Members
By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, May 10, 2001—Military food has had a bad rap through the ages.
One new meal is the first-strike ration. Its intent is to allow service members to eat on the move. “Warfighters won’t have to stop to use even a spoon,” Darsch said. The ration prototype consists of shelf-stable pocket sandwiches, and pouches of carbohydrate-enhanced “Zapplesauce” product and Ergo high-energy drink powder.
“What we envision is the Zapplesauce being consumed directly from the pouch using a nozzle,” he said. A fitting on the Ergo pouch would connect to a troop’s ‘camelback’ water carrier—soldiers would fill the bag with water, shake it and then drink from a nozzle.

ARLINGTON, Va. — “Field stripping” MREs — harvesting favorite items and chucking the rest — is an art quickly mastered by every servicemember who humps his own supplies in the field.(...)
Other First Strike items include a sports drink powder called ERGO, for “Energy Rich, Glucose Optimized;” “Zapplesauce,” which is applesauce fortified with energy producing maltodextrin; two beef jerky strips, crackers or bread, dried fruit, mixed nuts, and an accessories packet with a zip-lock baggie and not one, but two wet wipes — another soldier request.

Natick, Mass. — And now, from the folks who developed the atomic bomb, Kevlar underwear and the Humvee, presenting the latest in war-fighting technology:
Caffeinated meat.
In addition to caffeine, military technologists are lacing food with supplements such as omega 3s and curcumin, which act as anti-inflammatories. Maltodextrin, a complex carbohydrate that gives service members a little turbo charge, is injected into an amped-up applesauce called Zapplesauce.
