Snoopy Bowl (Giants vs. Jets at MetLife Stadium)

MetLife acquired the naming rights to the New Meadowlands Stadium—where the New York Giants and New York Jets play football—in 2011, renaming it MetLife Stadium. The Giants and Jets play an annual preason game there, and in 2011 it was for the MetLife trophy. MetLife has used the Peanuts comic strip character Snoopy in its advertisements, and Snoopy was featured on the MetLife Trophy.

“The Snoopy Bowl?” was cited on Twitter on June 27, 2011. “The Snoopy Bowl Trophy for winner of #nyg-#Jets” was cited on Twitter on August 26. 2011. The nickname “Snoppy Bowl” for “MetLife Bowl” has been used annually since 2011.

Wikipedia: MetLife Stadium
MetLife Stadium is a sports stadium located at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA. It is the home of the New York Giants and New York Jets of the National Football League and is adjacent to the site of the former Giants Stadium, which was home to the Giants from 1976 until December 2009 and the Jets from 1984 until January 2010. Like its predecessor, MetLife Stadium is the only NFL stadium shared by two teams.

The stadium is owned by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority on paper. However, the New York Giants and New York Jets jointly built the stadium using private funds, and operate it through the MetLife Stadium Company, a 50/50 joint venture between the two teams. In contrast, the Jets were tenants of the NJSEA at Giants Stadium. The NJSEA continues to provide security and emergency medical services staff under contract to the stadium, as they have done in the past at Giants Stadium. The stadium opened as New Meadowlands Stadium on April 10, 2009, featuring the Big City Classic lacrosse event. In 2011, MetLife, an insurance company based in New York City, acquired the naming rights to the stadium. At a construction cost of approximately $1.6 billion, it is the most expensive stadium ever built and is the largest stadium in the NFL in terms of permanent seating capacity.

Wikipedia: Snoopy
Snoopy is a cartoon dog in the long-running comic strip Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz. He is Charlie Brown’s pet dog. Snoopy began his life in the strip as a fairly conventional dog, but eventually evolved into one of the strip’s most dynamic characters and one of the most recognizable comic characters in the world. The original drawings of Snoopy were inspired by Spike, one of Schulz’s childhood dogs.

So why not have a trophy game to liven up the NFL preseason? That’s what the New York Jets and New York Giants have been doing since 2011 as they play in what is known the MetLife Bowl, which takes place in MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., and to the winner goes the MetLife Trophy.

Because the MetLife Trophy looks like the comic character Snoopy, the game has been nicknamed the “Snoopy Bowl” and the trophy the “Snoopy Trophy.”
