Title Town or Titletown (usually Green Bay, WI, but also other sports cities)

Green Bay, Wisconsin, has called itself “Titletown” or “Titletown, U.S.A.” (also “Title Town”) since 1961 because of its successful football team, the Green Bay Packers. “The Packers of ‘61, aiming to make Green Bay Titletown, U.S.A., come Dec. 31” was printed in the Green Bay (WI) Press-Gazette on November 10, 1961. “Green Bay ‘Titletown U.S.A.’” was a photo story in the Green Bay (WI) Press-Gazette on December 6, 1961. “A week-long civic program is planned, based on the theme ‘Title Town U.S.A.’” was printed in the Racine (WI) Journal-Times and Sunday Bulletin on December 10, 1961.

The Green Bay Packers have trademarked “Titletown.”

After hockey’s Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup (NHL Championship) in 2011, many fans began calling Boston, Massachusetts, “Titletown.” This was also based on the successes of its other sports teams, such as the Boston Red Sox (baseball), New England Patriots (football) and Boston Celtics (basketball).
