SALT LAKE CITY — “Turn your key, be idle free” is the message this week as cities around Utah pay special attention to vehicles idling near schools.

Utah Gov. Gary R. Herbert joined Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, Salt Lake County Mayor Peter M. Corroon, Provo City Mayor Lewis K. Billings and Ogden City Mayor Matthew Godfrey to launch Idle Free Awareness Week yesterday at a local elementary school to help educate local residents about saving gas, improving air quality and protecting good health by turning off car engines if idling time is more than 10 seconds, especially when picking up children at school.
