Poshtel (posh + hostel)

A “poshtel” (posh + hostel) is a hostel that also offers “posh” amenities, such as a swimming pool or a gourmet restaurant. The concept started in Europe, but quickly spread across the world.

‘Hostels are no longer the dirty, cheap shelters they used to be classified as - they are almost boutique hotels in some parts of the world,’ agrees Jill Nash, director of adventure company Luxury Backpackers.

‘On my travels I’ve been constantly surprised by the up-rise in ‘upmarket youth hostels’ which offer luxuries such as swimming pools, stunning views, gourmet dinners and decent wine lists.

“There’s this new thing in the UK and it’s called a poshtel,” explained Zulkifli.

“Budget travel is all the rage nowadays with the economy and all, so more and more boutique accommodations are catering to this new kind of crowd. They want comfort and cleanliness, and they want it at a low price. And they’re not just made up of the backpacking crowd anymore, but also families or older and more discerning travellers. That’s what we envisioned 41 Berangan to be — a poshtel.”

Hostels everywhere are challenging this view by offering travelers tons of quality for very little money. One group of hostels, called poshtels, are boutique hostels that offer many of the same luxuries found in hotels but at a price that any budget traveler can afford. Poshtels are excellent places to stay for travelers who are used to hotels and never stayed at a hostel or travelers who want a hostel with a few extra comforts.

(...).
One interesting trend to have emerged in the U.K. is a new concept of hotel known as the ‘poshtel’- a hybrid of the hostel and the hotel, which is being targeted at consumers who are watching the pennies but still demand a stylized, glamorous hotel experience.

Many hostels are upgrading their facilities in response, and emphasizing modern and luxurious design with high-tech facilities. They are offering restaurants, twin en-suite rooms, free Wi-Fi and breakfast, in order to compete with the boutique hotel offering.

The irresistible rise of the ‘poshtel’
by Laura Griffith-Jones· May 28 2015
A ‘poshtel’ –  otherwise known as an upscale or luxury hostel – combines the style and comfort of a boutique hotel with the price and sensibilities of a hostel. And the trend is coming your way.

An ever-increasing number of budget-conscious but discerning travellers expect something radically better than a bedbug-infested bunk in a dingy dorm full of snoring backpackers; they want good value yet sophisticated and unique places to stay – and, in response, some hostels are upping their game.

It’s called a poshtel — a combination of posh and hostel — and it’s bringing together two concepts that most travelers wouldn’t likely use together: luxury and hostel.

Most poshtels offer guests the option of staying in shared rooms or private rooms with ensuite bathrooms. Some even have penthouse suites.
