“Pomme de New York” (Big Apple sculpture by Les Lalanne on Park Avenue and 52nd Street, 2009)

“Pomme de New York” (“Apple of New York”) is a 2006 bronze apple sculpture by Les Lalanne,  the term for the French artist team of François-Xavier Lalanne (1927–2008) and Claude Lalanne (1924–2019). The sculpture (a tribute to New York CIty’s nickname of “Big Apple”) was displayed in Manhattan on Park Avenue at 52nd Street from September 12, 2009 to November 20, 2009.

In the 21st century, the works of Les Lalanne have been exhibited in different venues in New York City. In 2009, the artist duo participated in “Park Avenue Recession Art”, an effort developed by the Paul Kasmin Gallery, the New York City Parks Department’s public-art division, and the Fund for Park Avenue Sculpture Committee. The project comprised a series of sculptures in between crosswalks on Park Avenue. The featured pieces were a bronze apple called Pomme de New York on 52nd Street, Moutons on 53rd Street, Choupatte (Très Grand) on 56th Street, and Singe Avisé (Très Grand) on 58th Street, which was François-Xavier’s last sculpture.

Description:
Parks’ public art program, in conjunction with Paul Kasmin Gallery, and in cooperation with the Fund for Park Avenue Sculpture Committee, presents the first-ever large-scale outdoor exhibition in the U.S. of Claude & Francois-Xavier Lalanne’s sculptures. Seven sculptures and a single work comprised of 12 individual sculptures span multiple sites on Park Avenue between 52nd and 57th streets.

Featured works include Pomme de New York by Claude Lalanne (b.1924), a large-scale bronze sculpture of an apple, epitomizing the monumentality of the city’s iconic image (located on the North side of 52nd Street), and Francois-Xavier Lalanne’s (1927–2008) last sculpture, Singe Avise (Tres Grand), a cross-legged monkey with a pensive expression (located on the North side of 57th Street).
