New York City now has "pay-and-display" parking systems, but they originated in England.

Pay and display machines are a subset of ticket machines used for regulating parking in urban areas or in carparks. It relies on a customer purchasing a ticket from a machine and displaying the ticket on the dashboard, or windscreen or passenger window of the vehicle.

The B.I.D. wants to replace the 111 parking meters between the Avenue of the Americas and Broadway with as few as six "pay-and-display" machines. A driver deposits coins in a machine and gets a receipt to (be -- ed.) displayed on the dashboard.

Multispace meters work like the pay-and-display systems used in Europe, where tickets indicating exact parking and expiration times are dispensed by machine and displayed on car dashboards. Tested this year on West Eighth Street in Greenwich Village, they will be installed at 20,000 spaces on streets and in municipal lots and garages before year's end.
