“My ‘dry’ January is Sauvignon Blanc”

“Dry January” means to abstain from drinking alcohol for the month of January. It does not mean drinking dry wines, but there are jokes.

“Is a dry January when you only drink Sauvignon Blanc for a month?” was posted on Twitter by Darien Graham-Smith on January 10, 2012. “No wine in January. Comic wife says, ‘Thought you were having a dry January?’ Him, ‘It’s a dry Sauvignon Blanc’ (A comic illustration is shown.—ed.) was posted on Twitter by Marian on January 4, 2016. “Dry January (Sauvignon Blanc is pretty dry isn’t it?!)” was posted on Reddit—Funny on January 9, 2016. “My ‘dry’ January is Sauvignon Blanc” was posted on Twitter by sjones on January 6, 2021.

“Dry January is going well for me so far. I’ve not had a bath or a shower yet” is another “Dry January” joke.

Wikipedia: Dry January
Dry January is a public health campaign urging people to abstain from alcohol for the month of January, particularly practised in the United Kingdom, France and Switzerland.

The campaign, as a formal entity, appears to be relatively recent, being described as having “sprung up in recent years” even in 2014. However, the Finnish government had launched a campaign called “Sober January” in 1942 as part of its war effort. The term “Dry January” was registered as a trademark by the charity Alcohol Concern in mid-2014; the first ever Dry January campaign by Alcohol Concern occurred in January 2013.

Wikipedia: Sauvignon blanc
Sauvignon blanc is a green-skinned grape variety that originates from the Bordeaux region of France. The grape most likely gets its name from the French words sauvage (“wild”) and blanc (“white”) due to its early origins as an indigenous grape in South West France. It is possibly a descendant of Savagnin. Sauvignon blanc is planted in many of the world’s wine regions, producing a crisp, dry, and refreshing white varietal wine.

The wife came home from work to find me sat on the couch, watching tv and drinking wine.
“What’s this? You said you were having a dry January!” She shouted.
“It is dry” I replied, “it’s a sauvignon blanc.”
