Macy’s Flower Show

Macy's Flower Show has been a spring tradition for over thirty years. However, Macy's had given flower shows much earlier than this.

Union Square (San Francisco)
The "Gardens of Italia" will be presented during the Macy's 60th Annual Flower Show from April 7 through April 22. The Macy's Union Square windows will offer garden settings inspired by one of the historic villas of Italy: Villa de Balbianello on Lake Como, Villa d'Este near Rome and La Reggio di Caserta near Naples. In the Geary Street building, Macy's Union Square will combine classic Italian architecture and sculpture with the famed Gomes azaleas, hydrangeas, roses and cypress trees. Visitors to the O'Farrell side of the women's building will stroll down a cobblestone street, through a series of rooftop gardens that yearn for the sky but are grounded on the buildings they top. Combining climbing vines of clematis and bougainvillea with potted specimens of geraniums and sunflowersâ€"what better place could there be for a garden?

First Flower Show Opens
In a New York Store

AN innovation in flower shows in this city will open to the public tomorrow at Macy's, Herald Square, and may be seen through Saturday. Within the last twenty-four hours truckloads of flowers from East Coast nurseries, gardens and greenhouses and from California and Hawaii have been unpacked and fashioned by more than 100 men and women into a special version of spring.

Flowers on the marquee and in cornice window boxes are an invitation to the show within. Six windows of the Broadway building are transformed into floral settings. Thousands of orchids transform one window; another calls to mind a Hawaiian lanai; the anthurium in another a Siamese setting. Three other windows display roses and flowers typical of eastern gardens.

FLOWERS BURST OUT
OVERNIGHT AT MACY'S

This week at Macy's it will be difficult to see the customers for the trees -- and the snapdragons, the tuberous begonias, he roses, orchids and other blossoms that have burgeoned overnight in the store's first spring flower show. The unusual show, featuring more than "two million blooms," opened last evening at a press preview in the Broadway store.

Customers, waiting to complete purchases, may contemplate banks of multi-colored azaleas or languish amid palm trees and tropical blossoms, the latter flown from Hawaii for the show. Plants and cut flowers blend with merchandise displays and hanging baskets or rhododendrons, hydrangeas and other exotic blooms flower overhead.
