LaGarbage (LaGuardia Airport nickname)

New York City’s LaGuardia Airport was built on landfill. Pilots have called the airport “LaGarbage” for this and for other reasons.

“Serious airport problems are by no means confined to LaGarbage, as some pilots call the field built on refuse” was printed in the New York (NY) Times on July 10, 1988. “Another popular field is New York City’s La Guardia.  ‘La Garbage,’ as we call it” was printed in the book Unfriendly Skies: Revelations of a Deregulated Airline Pilot (1989) by Captain X (Brian Power-Waters) and Reynolds Dodson. “lagarbage Another name for LaGuardia airport in New York. A trashy delay infested place” was entered in the Urban Dictionary on December 10, 2006.

Another LaGuardia Airport nickname is “Bus Station of Airports.”

LaGuardia Airport (IATA: LGA, ICAO: KLGA, FAA LID: LGA) /ləˈɡwɑːrdiə/ is a domestic airport in East Elmhurst, Queens, New York City. Covering 680 acres (280 ha), the airport is the third busiest airport serving New York City, after JFK and Newark airports, and the twentieth busiest in the United States. The airport adopted its current name in 1953 for Fiorello La Guardia, the mayor of New York City when the airport was built. LGA is a hub for American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

Fun fact: The Jets got their name because their stadium is close to LaGuardia airport, which is known by pilots as “LaGarbage.” That’s very fitting. I feel really bad for all of those poor fans in the video.

Apparently the flight attendants refer to LaGuardia as LaGarbage and do their best to avoid it.
