Jammin' in Jamaica, Queens
Next week, August 5 and 6, is Jamaica's biggest street party, the Jamaica JAMS Festival. Friday night it's a live concert at King Park (home of Rufus King Manor), featuring Brazilian and Caribbean rhythms. Saturday is the main event, with Jamaica Avenue open only to pedestrians. There will be food, shopping, art, demonstrations, and two music stages -- Main Stage at 165th Street and the Emerging Artist Stage at 168th Street . For kids, there's an entire block devoted to free rides, popcorn, clowns, face-painting, and balloon sculpture. I plan to be there Saturday hunting for West Indian-style roti.
