SoSo (South of Southtown, San Antonio)

“SoSo” is the “south of Southtown” neighborhood of San Antonio. The neighborhood nickname—like so many others—is inspired by New York City’s 1960s-era neighborhood nickname SoHo (South of Houston Street). “SoSo” has been used since at least 2006.

“So-so” means “average” or “not so great,” and the “SoSo” neighborhood nickname has had similar “so-so” reviews.

Wikipedia Talk: San Antonio, Texas
Actually, “Great Northwest” is the valid name for the neighborhood (a bunch of subdivisions) near Culebra and 1604, extending north toward the Medical Center (I used to live there). And “SoSo”, or “South of Southtown,” really is the name being frantically pushed (signs posted all over) by the people in that area. But you’re right, no one else seems to be using it, nor are many people using “Southtown” for that matter, even though the city has given the area that official designation. Depending on whom you ask, this quiet older neighborhood with an artistic flavor has different boundaries and even dissimilar names. It’s Roosevelt Park. It’s Southpark Meadows. It’s Riverside Park. It’s Shallow Southtown. It’s soSo (south of Southtown).

Some are not even sure. Others—even those who have lived and worked in the area for decades—don’t know.

Great article, thanks. Any pictures of SoFlo, SoSo or Southtown? Your other pictures of San Antonio are great.
