Is it swineflu or whineflu?” was posted on Twitter by Peta Astbury-Bulsara on April 28, 2009. “H1N1 has now officially reached scamdemic proportions. Now, which pharmaceutical company to invest in?” was posted on Twitter by Jonathan Woods on June 11, 2009.
   
The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic popularized the “scamdemic” term. “Coronavirus is a #scamdemic and is being pumped up by the #fakenews media to crash the stock market and give Democrats a shot at the White House. #fakeflus” was posted on Twitter by Silence Franklin on February 24, 2020. “Democrats love the word pandemic. How about this one instead. Scamdemic” was posted on Twitter by Bill Mitchell on February 29, 2020.
   
“Fakedemic” (fake + pandemic), “hoaxdemic” (hoax + pandemic), “propagandemic” (propaganda + pandemic) and “shamdemic” (sham + pandemic) are similar terms.
