“I’m not much on seizing the day. I just kinda poke it with a stick”

“I’m not much on seizing the day. I just kinda poke it with a stick” is a jocular saying that has been printed on many images. “Carpe diem” (Latin, meaning “seize the day”) is a classical phrase. The speaker prefers to keep a safe distance by poking it with a stick.

“so much for sieze the day… maybe poke it with a stick and hope something vaguely productive results” was posted on X/Twitter by Matt Parker on September 6, 2011. “I’m not much on seizing the day, I just kinda poke it with a stick” was posted on X/Twitter by C’est La Vie on January 11, 2015.

Wikipedia: Carpe diem
Carpe diem is a Latin aphorism, usually translated “seize the day”, taken from book 1 of the Roman poet Horace’s work Odes (23 BC).

Translation
Carpe is the second-person singular present active imperative of carpō “pick or pluck” used by Horace to mean “enjoy, seize, use, make use of”. Diem is the accusative of dies “day”. A more literal translation of carpe diem would thus be “pluck the day [as it is ripe]”—that is, enjoy the moment. It has been argued by various authors that this interpretation is closer to Horace’s original meaning.

I’m less of a ‘seizing the day’ kind of person and more of a ‘poking it with a stick’.
