Big Brother Corporation (BBC nickname)

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) is a channel that is available on many cable systems around the world. The BBC has been given the backronym (back acronym) of “Big Brother Corporation” since at least 1955, when The Goon Show (a radio comedy program) did an episode titled Nineteen Eighty-Five, a spoof of George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eight-Four (1948) where “Big Brother” was coined.
The BBC nickname “Big Brother Corporation” has been popular on the Internet in the 2000s. Other BBC nicknames include “British Brainwashing Corporation,” “British Bullshit Corporation” and “Buggering British Children.”
Wikipedia: BBC
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a British public service broadcasting statutory corporation. Its main responsibility is to provide impartial public service broadcasting in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. The BBC is headquartered at Broadcasting House in London and has major production centres in Salford Quays, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff and Glasgow, and smaller production centres throughout the UK. The BBC is the world’s oldest national broadcasting organisation and the largest broadcaster in the world by number of employees, with about 23,000 staff.
The BBC is a semi-autonomous public service broadcaster that operates under a Royal Charter and a Licence and Agreement from the Home Secretary. Within the United Kingdom its work is funded principally by an annual television licence fee, which is charged to all British households, companies and organisations using any type of equipment to receive live television broadcasts; the level of the fee is set annually by the British Government and agreed by Parliament.
Outside the UK, the BBC World Service has provided services by direct broadcasting and re-transmission contracts by sound radio since the inauguration of the BBC Empire Service on 19 December 1932, and more recently by television and online.
Wikipedia: Big Brother (Nineteen Eighty-Four)
Big Brother is a fictional character in George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. He is the enigmatic dictator of Oceania, a totalitarian state taken to its utmost logical consequence – where the ruling Party wields total power for its own sake over the inhabitants.
In the society that Orwell describes, everyone is under complete surveillance by the authorities, mainly by telescreens. The people are constantly reminded of this by the phrase “Big Brother is watching you”, which is the core “truth” of the propaganda system in this state.
Since the publication of Nineteen Eighty-Four, the term “Big Brother” has entered the lexicon as a synonym for abuse of government power, particularly in respect to civil liberties, often specifically related to mass surveillance.

The Big Brother Corporation and Free Speech.
A very good article this on the question of Jim Spence and free speech. Now I dont see the same trepidation among hacks when they laughingly suggest that Hibs are $#@!e. Maybe we should all post indignant emails to the BBC Trust saying that we are being unfairly picked upon and demand that Tam Cowan be fired forthwith for his disparaging comments.
