“Why did the diner send back the rabbit stew?”/“Because it had a hare in it.”
A restaurant riddle is:
Q: Why did the diner send back the rabbit stew?
A: Because it had a hare in it.
A form of the “hare in the rabbit stew” pun was printed in an 1896 newspaper. The joke was posted on Twitter on November 8, 2011.
“How do you know when you’re eating rabbit stew?”/“When it has hares in it” is the same joke, but not in the context of a restaurant order.
27 November 1896, Wichita (KS) Weekly Eagle, pg. 7, col. 1:
The authorities who refused to arrest the Oklahoma hotel keeper who killed a guest who complained that the rabbit stew had a hare in it did perfectly right.
