Healy” was printed in The Home News (New Brunswick, NJ) on July 22, 1991. “I think it’s the National Institute of Hope. That’s what you represent to the Nation” was said by Congresswoman Anna Eshoo on September 30, 1997. “I’ve always been a supporter of funding for research at NIH, which I call our national institutes of hope” was said by Congresswoman Eshoo on May 22, 2003. “I’m always thrilled when we get to reauthorize NIH, which I always like to refer to as the ‘National Institutes of Hope.’ And I think that is the way the American people view the NIH” was said by Congresswoman Eshoo on July 19, 2005.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) (/ɛn.aɪ.ˈeɪtʃ/) is the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and public health research. It was founded in the late 1880s and is now part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. U.S. REPRESENTATIVE ANNA G. ESHOO (D-CA): Thank you, Mr. Chairman, for holding this very important hearing.

And welcome, Dr. Zerhouni.

This is a very large undertaking. I’ve been in the Congress—my 13th year—and I’m always thrilled when we get to reauthorize NIH, which I always like to refer to as the “National Institutes of Hope.” And I think that is the way the American people view the NIH.

U.S. REPRESENTATIVE ANNA G. ESHOO (D-CA): Thank you, Mr. Chairman, and Dr. Zerhouni, thank you for your outstanding presentation—cogent, highly instructive, encouraging, and a real—it’s an eloquent statement about your leadership at the NIH.

I’ve always thought that this committee’s jurisdiction of NIH is really the crown jewel of—of Energy and Commerce, and I’m very fond of saying to my constituents that NIH stands for the National Institutes of Hope, and I think that what you’ve presented to us today in detail is that much hope is being realized as a result of the legislation, and so kudos to you, certainly, to the ranking member of the committee when he was chairman as well as the rest of the committee for far-reaching legislation that’s brought us to what you presented to us today.

14 February 2011, Congressional Documents and Publications (Washington, DC):
WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 14, 2011) - President Obama’s budget released today ends billions of dollars in giveaways to the biggest oil companies and increases research into cancer and other diseases, but still makes cuts to key programs needed to help our nation’s poorest like low-income fuel assistance, Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) said today. Rep. Markey has pushed for increased funding for the National Institute of Health and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and has introduced legislation to repeal the Big Oil’s tax breaks and other subsidies.

“As our nation’s preeminent medical research institution, the National Institute of Health is our country’s National Institute of Hope,” said Rep. Markey. “NIH research is a critical part of strengthening our economy, inspiring the next generation of scientists and maintaining our nation’s leadership in innovation. President Obama’s increased funding for NIH will support advances in biomedical research and innovation that will improve the lives of millions of Americans, generate countless new jobs, and represents a key pillar of our economy recovery.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), the House author of the National Alzheimer’s Project Act signed into law earlier this year, and Founder and Co-chair of the Bipartisan Congressional Alzheimer’s Taskforce, today issued the following statement after the Alzheimer’s Association released its annual Fact and Figures Report:

“Now is not the time to cut funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Instead, we need a breakthrough investment for research. Research is medicine’s field of dreams from which we will harvest the ideas that lead to the cures for diseases like Alzheimer’s. NIH is the National Institutes of Health, but it’s also the National Institutes of Hope. In research we find hope for a cure. Now is our ‘Sputnik Moment’ and it’s also our ‘Apollo Moment’ - failure is not an option. “
