“My New Year’s resolution is to stop putting my foot in my mouth. I bet yours is to lose weight”
“My New Year’s resolution is to stop putting my foot in my mouth. I bet yours is to lose weight, huh?” is a jocular saying that has been printed on several images. The speaker is “putting a foot in the mouth” (making a mistake) by calling someone fat.
“Saw a cartoon in our local paper that is classic stuff and consistent with the curmudgeonly role: Two women having a New Years conversation over cups of coffee. One says, ‘My New Years resolution is to stop putting my foot in my mouth. I suppose your New Years resolution is, to lose all the extra weight you’re carrying around’” was posted on the newsgroup alt.support.mult-sclerosis on January 10, 2006.
“MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION IS TO STOP PUTTING MY FOOT IN MY MOUTH ALL THE TIME… I’LL BET YOURS IS LOSING WEIGHT, HUH?” (shown in a Speed Bump comic strip by Dave Coverly) was printed in The Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY) and other newspapers on January 11, 2010.
