“Yuan some, you lose some” (Chinese yuan puns)

The Chinese currency called the “yuan” has resulted in many English puns with the words “one” and “you won.” “Pun of the day: The Yuan and the Restless (i heart you, business spectator!)” was cited on Twitter on October 13, 2009.

The Economist (UK) used the headliine “A yuan-sided argument” on November 18, 2009. The publication had so many puns that The Economist summarized it in “Bad jokes in titles: Yuan more pun” on October 28, 2010.

The yuan was devalued in August 2015, resulting in more puns. “Yuan some, you lose some” was on Twitter on August 12, 2015.

Wikipedia: Chinese yuan
The yuan (/juːˈɑːn/ or /ˈjuːən/; sign: ¥; Chinese: 元; pinyin: yuán; [ɥɛ̌n]) is the base unit of a number of former and present-day Chinese currencies, and usually refers to the primary unit of account of the renminbi, the currency of the People’s Republic of China.[1] It is also used as a synonym of that currency, especially in international contexts – the ISO 4217 standard code for renminbi is CNY, an abbreviation of “Chinese yuan”. (A similar case is the use of the terms sterling and pound to designate the British currency and unit.)

Naming China’s currency
It’s yuan or the other

Jun 23rd 2010, 16:09 by G.L. | NEW YORK
APART from inspiring the writers of The Economist to a slew of truly awful puns (“Yuan for the money”, “yuan-way bet”, and of course the title of this post), the ups and downs of China’s currency have prompted the question: what is it actually called?

OUR last post from the house style guide admonished writers about the use of clichés in titles. So I note with chagrin that The Economist‘s series of awful puns in stories about the Chinese currency has reached epic proportions:

A yuan-sided argument
Yuan small step
Yuan up, yuan down
Tell me what you yuan, what you really, really yuan
It’s yuan or the other
Yuan step from the edge
Yuan-way bet
Yuan for the money

In an article entitled “Yuan more pun” on The Economist’s “Johnson” blog (Oct 28th 2010), Lane Greene Gideon Lichfield has tracked a long string of bad puns based on the name of the Chinese unit of currency.  The Economist’s Yuan groaners stretch back several years.

What we learnt this week: most headline writers don’t know how to pronounce Yuan or renminbi correctly. Disastrous puns aplenty.
