“Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds…”

“Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds. You can grow flowers or you can grow weeds” has been printed on many posters that have been on the walls of many schools. “Our Mind is a garden, our thoughts are the seeds, You can grow flowers or you can grow weeds” was cited in print in 2007. Authorship is unknown.

“A little child’s mind is like a garden; the seeds you plant there in grow either into weeds or flowers and both are hard to dig out” was cited in print in 1961. “The mind is a garden where thought flowers grow, the thoughts that we think are seeds that we sow”—a slightly different poem—was cited in 1962.

12 November 1961, Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, WI),  “You Can Do It” by Steve Ellingson, sec. 5, pg. 8, col. 1:
A little child’s mind is like a garden; the seeds you plant there in grow either into weeds or flowers and both are hard to dig out.

14 August 1962, Pella (IA) Chronicle, “Bethany Willing Workers Meet,” pg. 4, col. 5:
The precious thought given by Pauline Boot was “The mind is a garden where thought flowers grow, the thoughts that we think are seeds that we sow.”

For What It’s Worth
(...)
Gardening has been often used as a metaphor for life:
“As you sew, so shall you reap”
or
“Our Mind is a garden, our thoughts are the seeds
You can grow flowers or you can grow weeds.”
