Y’all Mahal (Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington)

Cowboys Stadium (the new stadium for the Dallas Cowboys football team, located in Arlington, TX) was completed in May 2009. The stadium was so expensive and iconic that it was compared to India’s famous Taj Mahal. Los Angeles (CA) Times football writer Sam Farmer dubbed Cowboys Stadium the “Y’all Mahal” on October 1,  2008.

“Y’all” is a typically Southern expression for “you all.”

Other nicknames for the new Cowboys Stadium have been “Jones Mahal,” “Death Star,” “Jerry World,” “Jerry Dome,” “Six Flags Over Jerry,” “Boss Hog Bowl (Boss Hawg Bowl),” and “Cowboys Cathedral (Cathedral of Football).”

Wikipedia: Cowboys Stadium
Cowboys Stadium is a domed stadium with a retractable roof in Arlington, Texas. It serves as the home of the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys. It replaced the partially-covered Texas Stadium, which opened in 1971, and served as the Cowboys’ home through the 2008 season. It was completed on May 27, 2009. The stadium seats 80,000, making it the third largest stadium in the NFL by seating capacity. The maximum capacity of the stadium, including standing room, is 110,000. The Party Pass (open areas) sections are behind seats in each end zone and on a series of six elevated platforms connected by stairways.

The stadium is the largest domed stadium in the world, has the world’s largest column-free interior and the largest high definition video screen which hangs from 20 yard line to 20 yard line. The facility can also be used for a variety of other activities outside of its main purpose (professional football) such as concerts, religious ceremonies, basketball games, college football and high school football contests, soccer matches, motocross races and rodeos similar to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Naming rights
Although the stadium had yet to sell naming rights, many fans started referring to the project with various nicknames such as “Jerry’s World”, “JerryWorld”, “Jerryworld”, or “JonesTown”, the “Jerrydome”, “Jones-Mahal”, the “Death Star”, “The Palace in Dallas”, the “Boss Hog Bowl” in reference to Jones’s continued affiliation to his Alma Mater nickname, the Razorbacks (or hogs) or “Six Flags Over Jerry” in reference to Jerry Jones and Six Flags Over Texas, which is near the new stadium, as well as lesser known others.

There was also a petition by some fans to have the stadium named after longtime Cowboys’ coach Tom Landry.

On May 13, 2009, Jerry Jones announced the official name as Cowboys Stadium.

Wikipedia: Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal ( /ˈtɑːdʒ məˈhɑːl/; Hindi/Urdu [t̪aːdʑ mɛɦəl] also “the Taj”; means “crown of buildings” in Urdu) is a mausoleum located in Agra, India. It is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Taj Mahal is considered to be the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Islamic and Indian architectural styles.

In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the white domed marble mausoleum is the most familiar component of the Taj Mahal, it is actually an integrated complex of structures. The construction began around 1632 and was completed around 1653, employing thousands of artisans and craftsmen. The construction of the Taj Mahal was entrusted to a board of architects under imperial supervision, including Abd ul-Karim Ma’mur Khan, Makramat Khan, and Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. Lahauri is generally considered to be the principal designer.

Over-the-top style of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is reflected in new stadium; features to include bringing outside in with glass walls and retractable roof.

Sam Farmer / ON THE NFL
ARLINGTON, Texas—It’s more than an NFL stadium. It’s the gleaming new home of the Dallas Cowboys, a $1.2-billion palace with glass walls, a translucent retractable roof, two quarter-mile-long arches and a high-definition video screen that stretches from one 20-yard-line to the other.

The place has all the over-the-top features you might expect from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the modern-day P.T. Barnum of the sports world.

It’s the Y’all Mahal.

Former Buckeye Trapasso Trying to Make Name for Himself
Written By:  Craig Lyndall
August 26, 2009
A.J. Trapasso is the backup punter for the Tennessee Titans this pre-season after going undrafted this season. Not that I am truly surprised because as we know punters rarely get drafted. Anyway, it has been an eventful campaign for Trapasso as he attempts to make a name for himself.  This week his name hit the news wire when one of his punts hit the ginormous scoreboard hanging from the ceiling in the Cowboys’ new stadium. The stadium cost more than a billion dollars and I have read some people refer to it as the “Y’all Mahal.” (Really.)
