“World peace begins in the kitchen”

“World peace begins in the kitchen” is a food saying that has been printed on many images. The peace usually means a non-animal (vegan) diet, but sometimes it just means sharing world cuisines.

“World Peace May Begin In Kitchen” (meaning at kitchen-table discussions) was printed in the Kokomo (IN) Tribune on February 7, 1965. “Kushi proposes that world peace begins in the kitchen and radiates outward from the individual to families, friends, communities, and nations” was printed in the Yoga Journal on January/February 1988. “World peace begins in the kitchen” was posted on the newsgroup alt.music.progressive on September 19, 1996. “1 Columbian 1 American 2 Czech Republican, 1 Australian and 1 Italian all making Soufflés together - world peace begins in the kitchen!” was posted on Twitter by La Cuisine Paris on December 10, 2010.

A few years ago, she took up partial residence in her hometown of Akron, Ohio (splitting time with London), and opened a nouveau Italian-vegetarian restaurant there called The Vegiterranean. Its sleek modern lines and stainless-steel style divulge Hynde’s art school education (she worked at an architectural firm when she first moved to London in ‘73), and its motto (“World peace begins in the kitchen”) reflects her long-standing activism on behalf of animals.
