Winter Texan

“Winter Texan” is what is called a “snowbird” in Florida—someone who comes down from the north to experience a more moderate temperature during winter (December through April).  The term “Winter Texan” has been used since at least 1975, mostly in cities in the south of Texas.

Welcome Winter Texans!
Welcome Home ! Many of you call Texas your home away from home during the winter months. By RV, motor home, fifth wheel , bus and just about anything else on wheels, Winter Texans (Snowbirds) descend on the Lone Star State to escape the frigid temperatures of there native states.

Winter Texans
...a remarkable breed…

What a rare breed of independent citizen - a truly remarkable group of active and motivated adventurers - Winter Texans are a family of part time residents who are helping to mold the culture and character of Texas.

Of every size and dimension, they annually converge on the warmer climate of their home away from home state to spend the colder months under a warm Texas sun. They bring with them RVs, motor coaches of every size and description, fifth-wheels and travel trailers. Some own second homes in Texas, or lease apartments and homes upon arrival. A few stay with family and friends. But they come, and they come in larger numbers every year.

In south Texas, the trailer parks are vacation havens for “Winter Texans,” the above-average-income, but middle-to-lower-class retirees from the midwestern United States who return here each year as soon as it gets cold up north. Trailer parks often feature luxury mobile homes that are much nicer than the hovels that populate the “colonias” around here. We have some white trash parks, too—everyone does. But some of our parks are in the part of town, and have pretty lawns, immaculately kept mobile homes, and the most anal-retentive people you’d ever want to meet.

I’m speaking, of course, of migrant northern bees (also refered to as “snow bees”, or as we call them: “Winter Texans”)  The native bees are just too damn ornery.  😉
