“Why did Johnny get low grades after Thanksgiving?”/“Everything is marked down after the holidays.”

FATHER/MOTHER: Johnny, why did you get such low grades after Thanksgiving/Christmas?
JOHNNY: Everything is marked down after the holidays.

The joke (in slightly different form) was printed in the New York City humor magazine Puck on January 28, 1903.
