Where Yee-Hah Meets Olé (Eagle Pass slogan)

“Where Yee-Hah Meets Olé” has been the slogan of Eagle Pass (on the border with Piedras Negras, Mexico) since 1995. A 2002 slogan is “Eagle Pass ... Piedras Negras – Good Choice.” The old slogan is still used and has even been voted the top Texas city slogan.

Where Yee-Hah Meets Olé

Eagle Pass offers the fastest route between San Antonio and Mexico and has the resources and distributional reach to meet your business’ expansion needs: an enthusiastic labor pool; well-maintained infrastructure, including two international bridges and an international railway; highway and port shipping; an academically recognized school system; excellent medical and financial services; as well as room to grow with available land, buildings, and commercial or industrial parks.

Less-costly slogans can also be effective. Eric Swartz, president of TaglineGuru.com, a Web site about slogans, mottos and nicknames, is fond of a slogan used by Eagle Pass, Texas.

“I love ‘Where yee-hah meets olé.’ That packs so much into so little,” he said. “I call sloganeering the haiku of branding. It compresses the meaning of a vision or a value.”

Sandra Martinez, executive director of the Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce, said the slogan was concocted by a San Antonio agency and a tourism committee in the early ‘90s for “considerably less” than several hundred thousand dollars.

The phrase, which conveys the city’s Western heritage and its proximity to Mexico, usually elicits responses of “Wow, that sounds like fun,” Ms. Martinez said.

Four years ago the chamber adopted a new slogan: “Eagle Pass ... Piedras Negras – Good Choice.” But it still uses “Where yee-hah meets olé” on occasion and has no intention of giving it up.

“We’ve been asked by other communities, ‘When are you releasing that, because we want to use it,’ ” Ms. Martinez said.

The answer: “We’re not.”
