“Where the elite meet to cheat”

“Where the elite meet to eat” was the slogan of Duffy’s Tavern,  an American radio situation comedy, airing from 1941 to 1951. The saying “where the elite meet to cheat”—on their spouses—was cited in two 2003 books. “Where the elite meet to cheat” was said about meetings of the World Economic Forum in 2009 and 2012 blog posts.

The finance blog Jesse’s Café Americain discussed interest rate rigging on August 2, 2013, saying:

“Apparently New York and London are where the elite meet to cheat.”

The World Social Forum was created in Porto Alegre in 2000 by Brazilian social organisations such as the Landless Workers Movement, along with Socialist Brazilian NGOs, namely Federation of Social and Educational Assistance Bodies (FASE). Orginally created as an alternative to the World Economic Summit, where the elite meet to cheat and cower behind one of the world’s largest security apparatus, it grew due to support from local administration and more high-profile international groups like Association for the Taxation of Financial Transactions for the Aid of Citizens (ATTAC).
