“Whenever a waiter asks me how I want my steak, I always say ‘free’”
Waiters ask how a diner would like a steak to be cooked, such as “rare” or “medium” or “well done.” A joke on this was published by John Wagner’s Maxine comic illustration in “Crabby Road” on January 22, 2013:
“Whenever a waiter asks me how I want my steak, I always say ‘free.’”
The saying was posted on Facebook by Tracy Truett at 8:00 PM on January 21, 2013, and again on Facebook by Frank Piccola at 8:46 PM on January 21, 2013. Despite this timing discrepancy, the Maxine comic appears to be the original source of the joke.
