“When you pay with a debit card, you’re paying with your past earnings”

“When you pay for things with a credit card, you’re paying with your future earnings. When you pay with a debit card, you’re paying with your past earnings” is an explanation of credit cards and debit cards.

“My debit card pays for things with past hours of my life, and my credit card pays with future hours of my life” was posted on Reddit—Showerthoughts on August 10, 2015. “Your debit card pays for things with past hours of your life, and your credit card pays with future hours of your life” was posted on Reddit—Showerthoughts on October 18, 2018 .

There has been criticism of this saying. Some people have money and always pay their credit cards on time. They used credit cars for bonus points, so they can pay a month later, so they do not have to carry large amounts of cash, or for other reasons.

“Truth is a debit card—pay first, enjoy later. Lie is a credit card—enjoy first, pay later” is another saying about credit cards and debit cards.

All of that credit, which represents a claim on future earnings, (as opposed to savings which represent past earnings) is going to start imploding:  just as credit expanded as the market rose.

Credit happens when you work the future… the dream. Debit happens when you work the past… the job. Now does you dream job really exist?

Not of you have already earned the money you’ll use to pay off the credit card at end of the month.
I never use a credit card to buy something I don’t already have the cash to pay for. I use the card for points and other benefits.
