“When you hoist a championship trophy, a mystical blood kinship is formed”
NFL football coach Bill Parcells said at his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2013:
“We’ve got that momentary time of exhilaration where you hoist that championship trophy over your head, and I don’t know what happens, but some mystical blood kinship is formed, and although it’s a fleeting moment, that kinship lasts for the rest of your life. And the thing I’m most proud of with my teams is they have it, and I know, because I lived it. Because when something goes wrong with one, all the others run to help, and I know, because they’ve run to help me.”
Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer cited the Parcells quote after his team won the national championship of college football in January 2015. Meyer said that once you hoist a championship trophy, a blood transfusion occurs and everyone on that team becomes brothers for life.
It’s not known when Parcells first used the saying. A January 2015 tweet said that Parcells used the line in the film America’s Game: The Super Bowl Champions (1986 New York Giants) (2007). In the autobiography Parcells: A Football Life (2014), he wrote:
“Paraphrasing a term he first heard from NBA legend Pat Riley, Parcells says, ‘It’s a blood kinship, and it doesn’t ever fade.’”

Duane Charles “Bill” Parcells (born August 22, 1941) is a former American football head coach, both in college with the Air Force Falcons, and the National Football League with the New York Giants, New England Patriots, New York Jets, and Dallas Cowboys and is currently a “Courtesy Consultant” for the Cleveland Browns. He is known as “The Big Tuna”, a nickname about the shape of his physique derived from a team joke during his tenure as linebackers coach of the New England Patriots.
Parcells won two Super Bowl rings with the New York Giants, defeating the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI and the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV. He led the New England Patriots to Super Bowl XXXI, but lost to the Green Bay Packers 35-21. He also led the New York Jets to the 1998 AFC Championship Game.

Why do we care about sports?

Years later, Bill Parcells described the locker room feeling of that win in sacramental terms: “It’s like a blood transfer. You get theirs and they get yours.” The metaphor is intense, but perfectly apt. Sports are indeed a matter of the blood, but in two distinct ways. There’s the blood of the fans and the team, mingled through identification. Then there’s the blood of the opponent, which must first be spilled before the mingling can deliver its communal benefit.

Parcells showed his many sides during his unscripted 20-minute speech: He was philosophical, informative, educational, especially on the dynamics of life in the locker room; he was thankful to his ex-wife and three daughters for their support of a nomadic coaching life, and to the owners, players and coaches from his 19 years of being a head coach in the NFL and two stints as an executive.

Parcells gained admission into Canton based largely on his two Super Bowl titles with the Giants, and in his speech he reiterated the bonds to 1986 and 1990 remain strong and everlasting.
“We’ve got that momentary time of exhilaration where you hoist that championship trophy over your head,’’ Parcells said, “and I don’t know what happens, but some mystical blood kinship is formed, and although it’s a fleeting moment, that kinship lasts for the rest of your life.’’

Urban Meyer quotes ‘Bill Parcells’ “blood transfusion” line from the 1986 Giants ‘America’s Game,’ episode. Love it.
