“What do you call a Native American cook?”/“A Sioux chef.”

A sous-chef de cuisine (French for “under-chef of the kitchen”) shouldn’t be confused with a “Sioux” chef, but there are jokes. “SIOUX CHEF OPENING” was an error that was printed in a San Diego (CA) newspaper in 1981.

“Just read a funny joke…‘Sioux Chef Required….Cherokees Need Not Apply’” was posted on Twitter  on April 20, 2009. “Did you hear about the native american that just isn’t good enough to be head chef? Yeah, he’s a sioux-chef” was posted on Twitter on March 11, 2010. “If you specialise in native American cuisine, does that make you a Sioux chef?” was posted on Twitter on April 14, 2011.

There is a Native American cuisine website called The Sioux Chef.

“What do you call a cook who becomes a lawyer?”/“A sue chef” is another sous-chef de cuisine joke.

Wikipedia: Sous chef
A sous-chef de cuisine (French for “under-chef of the kitchen”) is a chef who is “the second in command in a kitchen; the person ranking next after the executive chef.” Consequently, the sous-chef holds much responsibility in the kitchen, which can eventually lead to promotion to becoming the executive chef. A sous-chef is employed by an institution that uses a commercial-grade kitchen, such as a restaurant, hotel, or cruise ship.

The sous-chef has many responsibilities, because the executive chef has a more overarching role. Sous-chefs must plan and direct how the food is presented on the plate, keep their kitchen staff in order, train new chefs, create the work schedule, and make sure all the food that goes to customers is of the best quality to maintain high standards.

Wikipedia: Sioux
The Sioux /suː/ also known as Lakota, are groups of Native American tribes and First Nations peoples in North America. The term can refer to any ethnic group within the Great Sioux Nation or to any of the nation’s many language dialects. The Sioux comprise three major divisions based on language divisions: the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota.

4 August 1981, Los Angeles (CA) Times, “Around the Southland: Ad for Chef Spells Only Confusion” by Steve Harvey, pt. 2, pg. 1, col. 3:
“SIOUX CHEF OPENING,” the ad in the San Diego suburban newspaper began.

It was supposed to say s-o-u-s chef,” explains Dan Landers, the breakfast chef.
