“We invented Texas Hold ‘em, but we can’t play it here” (Kinky Friedman)
Kinky Friedman (the Texas author and humorist) ran for Texas Governor in 2006 and advocated returning gambling to the state.
“We invented Texas Hold ‘em, but we can’t play it here” is one of the lines that he used on the campaign trail.

The independent candidate said he also supports reinstating legalized casino gambling in Texas. Friedman added that the recent legislation outlawing that kind of gambling had a tremendous negative economic impact on the Alabama-Coushatta and Kickapoo tribes that had casinos on tribal lands in the state.
“Louisiana’s gambling interests spent $70 million to keep legalized casino gambling out of Texas,” Friedman said. “The states with legalized gambling are sucking the dollars right out of Texas.

“When I was on my fact finding mission in Vegas, one of the facts I did find is that everyone was from Texas,” Friedman said. “Louisiana gamblers are mad at Oklahoma because they’re taking their Texans away from them. We’re being played like chumps while billions of dollars are pouring out of Texas. We invented Texas Hold ’Em and we can’t even play it here. It’s because Perry’s base is the far religious right and they don’t like gambling - except out of state.”
