“We don’t need shooters, we need makers” (basketball adage)
Basketball teams need shooters, but basketball coaches often correct this with, “We don’t need shooters. We need makers.” That is, a team needs accurate shooters.
“Some people say you need shooters. You need makers,” Southern Illinois University basketball coach Chris Lowery said in December 2007. ““We had enough shooters, we didn’t have enough makers,” New York Knicks basketball coach Mike D’Antoni said in December 2008. D’Antoni is credited with popularizing the saying.

Turns out, Steph Curry, ‘best shot-maker ever,’ also has a mean streak
November 4, 2015 8:51 am ET
There’s an old saying popularized by the coach who revolutionized offensive basketball in the NBA that aptly describes how Stephen Curry is terrorizing an entire sport.
During those rare times when one of his teams was struggling to put the ball in the basket, Mike D’Antoni would find himself fielding questions about whether he needed more shooters. With his sharp wit and West Virginia twang, D’Antoni would always quip, “I don’t need shooters. I need makers.”
