“We are a nation of sheep, and someone else owns the grass”
“We are a nation of sheep, and someone else owns the grass” is a saying that has been printed on many images. “Sheep” means an order-complying animal.
“We are a nation of sheep, and someone else owns the grass-George Carlin” was posted on Twitter by Elissa (V) on July 1, 2010. The saying is usually credited to American stand-up comedian George Carlin (1937-2008), but it’s not known that he ever said it. The first citation is two years after his death.
“A nation of sheep” was popularized from the title of a 1961 book about United States foreign policy by William Lederer (1912-2009).
