Way South Austin
“Way South Austin” is a nickname for the area in Austin south of Slaughter Lane on Manchaca (pronounced “man-shack”) Road. “Way South Austin” has been cited in print in 1999 and 2000, but became popular when Moontower Saloon opened in 2012 and used the address “10212 Manchaca Road • 78748 • Way South Austin, Texas, USA.”
KVUE (Austin’s ABC television affiliate) did a story on April 4, 2014, “‘Way South Austin’ could be next entertainment district.” Other establishments were planned to follow Moontower’s lead, changing the residential area into a new place for entertainment.

ABOUT
Ok… so it took a while.
Almost 2 years ago we set out to create a one of kind, locally owned, drink/dine destination for South Austin. Our concept was to combine the best aspects of a friendly neighborhood bar with a prime location for some of Austin’s best trailer dining options. For the drinkers – a full bar, draft and bottled beer, no souless corporate strip mall location…no awful pub grub. For the foodies…no huffing carbon monoxide 10 feet from a busy street to spoil your meal and the option of an adult beverage to wash it down. For everyone, some nice local music and good company, and all of this offered in a cool 3 acre park-like lot shaded with mature oaks, pool, games, washer pits, and more. So spread out relax and enjoy yourself Way South Austin style. You’ll be glad you did.

South First BarBQ has occupied the same plain strip-mall location for over seven years—basically as an outgrowth of the owner’s barbecue catering business. On the days when the trailer isn’t parked on-site for large-scale serving, it’s stoked up providing solid barbecue for the denizens of way South Austin.

Horsely’s been recording a great deal of new material at his new Sluggo Sound Studio in way South Austin (“Bubble Country!” he calls it, though I always thought that was “Bubba country”), including his own Guardez Lou and their various side projects, as well as taping Matt Meshbane’s Hoot Nites, so look for a CD of the Rolling Stones hoot by the end of the year, and maybe one of this Saturday’s Led Zeppelin hoot at the Metro sometime after that.

Way South Austin is getting a “new American grill” with a “seasonal menu” and “craft cocktails” called District Kitchen + Cocktails. Chef/Partner Amir Hajimaleki was the executive chef at Dallas’s Kona Grill outpost and a graduate of Austin’s branch of le Cordon Bleu.

AUSTIN—First there was downtown, and then there was Fourth street, the East side and Rainey Street.
Now Austin’s next entertainment district could be south, specifically the area just south of Slaughter Lane off Manchaca Road, between Manchaca and Old Manchaca Road.
The bar that started it all in this area of South Austin is called Moontower Saloon, and even though it’s been open less than two years, it is consistently one of the top 10 highest sellers of alcohol in Austin, according to numbers released by the Texas Comptroller’s Office and the TABC.

There’s a nickname for this part of the city. John Torres, who owns Rockadive Austin food truck in the Native South Food Park next to the Moontower, says “everything south of Slaughter on Manchaca is known as Awesome, Texas.”
It is also referred to by many as “Way South Austin.”
