Waitsplaining (waiter/waitress + explaining)
“Waitsplaining” (waiter/waitress + explaining) is when the waiter or waitress explains the menu to a diner. New York (NY) Times restaurant critic Pete Wells wrote on May 24, 2016:
“The complexity of deciding what or how to order is one reason servers are prone to waitsplaining. Dinner requires a lot of patient listening and smiling in these early months. True, the menu is paved with terms some New Yorkers will trip over.”
“Forgive me for waitsplaining” was cited on Twitter on December 22, 2014 and “#waitsplaining” was tweeted on October 21, 2015, but those are isolated and unclear uses of the term.

@NuclearAnthro I am not surprised. But then, I was the worst waitress ever. Seriously terrible and did not give a fuck.

@QuestyNM forgive me for waitsplaining, I did not know you had done a stint. May I ask details?

The complexity of deciding what or how to order is one reason servers are prone to waitsplaining. Dinner requires a lot of patient listening and smiling in these early months. True, the menu is paved with terms some New Yorkers will trip over. I was happy to learn that the sweet potato shakarkandi are tender cubes stacked over shaved kohlrabi in one of the best small starters.

Wells also notes that there’s a lot of “waitsplaining” in the dining room, partially because the prix fixe menu has confusing supplements. But overall, the critic thinks Indian Accent deserves a two star rating.
