On Tuesday night, a group of young men in oversized winter coats crowded close to the windows of El Nuevo Caridad, a restaurant in Washington Heights. Inside, there was a baseball game on television and the customers were watching and cheering as if it were the World Series.

The restaurant's slogan is "Un cuadrangular en sabor," or a home run of flavor. The menu features dozens of dishes named after famous Latino ballplayers, based on what they order when they visit, and lists their preferred side dishes. A footnote on the menu assures customers that each player has "authorized" his own dish before lending his name.
