“I know it’s a process, and like guys have been saying you’ve got to trust the process,” he (Nerlens Noel—ed.) said. “At this stage, I just want to make sure I have energy and that I’m playing hard… If I do the little things, the numbers will speak for themselves.”

The locker room lives by a different phrase, one that Hinkie underscores so often that it might as well be capitalized on a wall inside Wells Fargo Center. “They tell us every game, every day, ‘Trust the Process,’” guard Tony Wroten says. “Just continue to build.” The mantra is so pervasive that there is only one person on the team who even comes close to explicitly mentioning an NBA title—a Result, instead of The Process—when I ask about goals.

Why Sixers Fans Still Need to Trust the Process
by Julian Bravo
Trust the process is what the Sixers cornerstone Joel Embiid tweeted, minutes after Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie traded away Michael Carter-Williams and K.J. McDaniels to contending teams for valuable draft picks and Isaiah Canaan. Hinkie trended on Twitter as turmoil erupted. Casual fans and most of all the national media, paused in a baffled manner, then resumed their day in disarray and laughter.

So while I really want this to be the turning point, there’s no guarantee that’s what it’ll be. Tell me KAT is The Dude, then yeah, I’m in, let’s ride, where’s my gun. But if not…? We’re into year three of the Great Sixers Rebuild, desperate for something to show for it. Jrue got traded. Nerlens, Embiid, and Saric were BPA picks undeterred by delayed gratification. MCW is god knows where. We have Trusted The Process. We’ve enjoyed this franchise way more than we’ve had any right to. We know that it isn’t about results, so long as the methodology is sound. We know this. But also… results would be pretty tight.
