Totalitolerance (totalitarian + tolerance)

“Totalitolerance” (totalitarian + tolerance) was cited in print in 2003 and 2004 and appears to have been first used in the United Kingdom. “Heard a great new word this morning: Totalitolerance - the paradoxical situation of force-feeding a liberal worldview upon the masses!” was cited on Twitter on November 26, 2009. “Portmanteau of the day: totalitolerance (i.e., the liberal’s definition of tolerance)” was cited on Twitter on May 16, 2012.

“Totalitolerance” forces everyone to be tolerant; for example, a Christian bakery must make gay wedding cakes, even if this goes against the baker’s religious beliefs. “Totalitolerance” describes intolerant (or forced) tolerance.

December 2003, ThirdWay, “‘Why the Rest Hates the West’ by Meic Pearse” book review by Alistair McKitterick, pg. 31, col. 2:
The Western ‘value’ of tolerance is better dubbed ‘totalitolerance’ because our culture will tolerate anything apart from those who believe in absolute values of morality. Western-style tolerance allows for personal beliefs, but not public ones.

13 November 2004, The Spectator, “Accidental hero” by Daniel Hannan, pp. 21-22:
Many of his supporters - at least judging by the emails I have received from constituents - are attracted precisely by what they see as his homophobia. Equally, though, there are plenty of people who dislike what one might call the ‘totalitolerance’ of the Left but who want no truck with anti-gay prejudice.

Totalitolerance
(...)
But what we agree about here is overwhelmingly more important than any of that stuff, which we can bicker about for decades without either of us attempting to boss anybody around.  What we agree on is that nobody can use the God of Tolerance to create totalitarianism, or, as the word I just coined has it, “totalitolerance.”

But as the intolerance intrinsic to liberalism has grown stronger, we now have a mania that results in the phenomenon of other views getting shouted down, run out of business, or packed off to sensitivity training. One writer has coined quite a descriptive word for it—totalitolerance.

The dawn of totalitolerance
The left despises free speech, except for obscenity

By Robert Knight - - Sunday, May 22, 2016
ANALYSIS/OPINION:
Ever notice how threats of force invariably follow the left’s pleas for “tolerance?”

Let’s call this criminalization of dissent “totalitolerance.” This term has been around since at least 2013, but it deserves wider circulation, given the ferocity and frequency of progressive attacks on free speech.

M.D. Harmon: ‘Totalitolerance’ is the secular faith of the progressive reformer
It creeps into issues ranging from climate change to gun control, from abortion to wedding-cake bakers to access to addictive drugs.

BY M.D. HARMON
My friend Bob Knight, a Cape Elizabeth native who writes a column for The Washington Times, coined a new word this week.

It’s “totalitolerance” – and I wanted to share it because its progressive practitioners are doing their absolute best to make you shut up and obey them under the false flag of “toleration.”
