Torture All Kids Severely (“TAKS” backronym)

TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) is a standardized test that replaced other tests in 2003. TAKS has been given the backronymic (back acronym) nickname “Torture All Kids Slowly” in 2008, “Tortures All Kids Successfully” in 2009 and “Torture All Kids Severely” in 2010.

STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, given nicknames such as “Stupid Test Acknowledged As Ridiculous” began to replace TAKS in 2012.

Wikipedia: Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills
The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) is a standardized test currently used in Texas grade 9-11 and before 2012, in grade 3-8 to assess students’ attainment of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies skills required under Texas education standards. It is developed and scored by Pearson Educational Measurement with close supervision by the Texas Education Agency. Though created before the No Child Left Behind Act was passed, it complies with the law. It replaced the previous test, called the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills or TAAS, in 2003. Prior to 1990, the test was known as the Texas Educational Assessment of Minimum Skills or TEAMS .

Those students being home-schooled or attending private schools are not required to take the TAKS test.

From 2012 onwards, there has been a test phaseout due to replacement by the STAAR test and Texas Senate Bill 1031, therefore the TAKS test will completely be phased out by 2014.

Torture All Kids Slowly (better known as TAKS)
My 10 year old niece, Alex, has informed me that TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge & Skills) is really Torture All Kids Slowly. You know, after what I’ve seen and have had to do in the last five years, I would have to agree with her

The push to succeed (both student/teacher) is very intense. My Grandson’s school has a banner hanging in the doorway that proclaim’s TAKS Failure is not an Option…
At the local HS someone took it a step further,
TAKS, Equal opportunity test, Torture’s All Kids Successfully.
