Toilet-to-Tap (recycled water)
“Toilet-to-tap” (or “toilet to tap”) is another term for “recycled water.” The term is unpalatable to some, with a clear reminder of the source (the toilet) of the water. The term “toilet-to-tap” was first popularized in California from 1997-2000, and then became the subject of many news articles during California’s 2015 drought.

TOILET TO TAP…Sewage as it enters the Charleston waste treatment plant, left, then goes through the settling stage, and emerges sparkling clear. The bottle on the far right is tap water, scarcely distinguishable from the effluent.

Here in San Diego, California, they proposed putting treated wastewater back into the reservoirs. After treatment it is actually cleaner than the water currently in the reservoir, and it sits for years before getting processed again. The science is valid and proven, but the politicians labeled it “toilet-to-tap” which went over real well. Folks don’t want to know that we get our current drinking from the Colorado River, downstream from many sewage treatment plants !!

I talked to a wastewater specialist and he said that “toilet to tap” is a well tested technology. I’m trying to find out how many residences use such technologies.

Officials insist that the program is feasible, safe and a solution to California’s water shortage problem. Some think the idea is revolting.

As the California drought worsens, some communities such as Orange County, San Diego and the Silicon Valley are expanding water recycling programs, and support for “toilet to tap” programs appears to be growing from a once-squeamish public.

Instead of thinking of #recycledwater as “toilet-to-tap”, we should try thinking of it as “shower to flower”: http://bit.ly/1ScObS6
