“To feel ‘fit as a fiddle,’ you must tone down your middle” is a saying that has appeared on many lists of dieting and exercise quotations (where it is usually credited to “anonymous”). A fiddle is an instrument with a thin middle; the sayings “fine as a fiddle” and “fit as a fiddle” date to at least the 1600s.
“To feel fit as a fiddle, you must tone down your middle” has been cited in print since at least 1987, when it was listed in ‘Words of Wisdom” by the group TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly).
