“Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it—next semester”
George Santayana (1863-1952) wrote in 1896, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” A parody was printed in the Washington (DC) Post on July 19, 1984:
“Bill Gallatin of Burke says this one’s doing the rounds at George Mason University: Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it—next semester.”
“Professor: ‘Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it—next semester’” was printed in an advertisement in the Council Grove (KS) Republican on August 12, 1985, and similar advertisements appeared in many other newspapers. “As my college history professor used to say, ‘Those who don’t know history will repeat it next semester’” was printed in the book Backwards Planning (2011) by Harriet Isecke.

Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Which just goes to show that if you fail to learn from the lessons of history, you will have to repeat it next semester.
20 July 2002, The Times (London, UK), “Teaching history,” pg. 25:
Sir, Mr Huw Beynon (letter, July 17) asks whether we really need to bother with the teaching of history.
I am assured by an American friend that over there it is not only necessary but vital. He insists that “Those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it…next semester.”

Our teacher told us that if we don’t learn from our history, then we are doomed to repeat it next semester.
