“They say I have the best ass below 14th Street”

“They say I have the best ass below 14th Street” is a saying that has been printed on several images. The song “Light My Candle” in the Jonathan Larson musical Rent (1996) contains the lyrics:

“MIMI MARQUEZ: They say I have the best ass below 14th street. Is it true?”

The dating saying “I don’t date below 14th Street” is somewhat related.

Wikipedia: Rent (musical)
Rent is a rock musical with music, lyrics, and book by Jonathan Larson, loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in Lower Manhattan’s East Village in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.

The musical was first seen in a workshop production at New York Theatre Workshop in 1993. This same Off-Broadway theatre was also the musical’s initial home following its official 1996 opening. The show’s creator, Jonathan Larson, died suddenly of an aortic dissection, believed to have been caused by undiagnosed Marfan syndrome, the night before the Off-Broadway premiere. The musical moved to Broadway’s larger Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996.

Wikipedia: 14th Street (Manhattan)
14th Street is a major crosstown street in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Presently primarily a shopping street, in the earlier history of New York City 14th Street was an upscale location, but it lost its glamor and status as the city grew northward.

At Broadway, 14th Street forms the southern boundary of Union Square. It is also considered the northern boundary of Greenwich Village, Alphabet City, and the East Village, and the southern boundary of Chelsea, Flatiron/Lower Midtown, and Gramercy.

Perhaps one of the other most controversial characters in the show is Mimi, a stripper struggling with AIDS and addiction, whose presence in the play often tends to fluctuate between humanizing these experiences and casting them in a troublingly glamorous light. Though “Rent” is certainly groundbreaking in its acceptance of drug culture (rather than demonizing it, as the mainstream media often does), the role of Mimi is notoriously easy to flatten; with a spunky attitude and the best ass below 14th Street, heroin has never looked sexier – and for a crowd of students for whom heroin is both widely accessible and rarely resultant in systemic consequences, such a portrayal has heavy implications.
