“There is another side to the pancake” (another opinion or look)

A pancake has two large, flat sides. “There’s always another side of/to that/the pancake” means that there’s another side to a story, or another look or feature of something that can be discovered. “Of course there is another side to this pan-cake” was printed in the Public Press (Northumberland, PA) on October 24, 1913. “Well, it doesn’t hurt to get all the angles. But there is another side to this pancake nevertheless” was printed in the Times-Leader (Wilkes-Barre, PA) on August 11, 1927.

The saying has been popularized in the 2000s by American television personality Phil (“Dr. Phil”) McGraw and American football coach Bill Parcells.

“There are two sides of a coin” is a similar expression, while “they are two sides of the same coin” means that two seemingly different things are actually connected.

24 October 1913, Public Press (Northumberland, PA), pg. 8, col. 3:
Of course there is another side to this pan-cake, for while the Northumberland Press is burning snobs at the stake for their “sass” there have been telephone girls whose responses when called would not do for examples of propriety or prize winning politeness.

11 August 1927, Times-Leader (Wilkes-Barre, PA), “Just the Summer Curtailment” (editorial), pg. 16, col. 1:
Well, it doesn’t hurt to get all the angles. But there is another side to this pancake nevertheless.

6 April 1943, Daily Journal-Gazette (Mattoon, IL), “News Behind the News” by Peter Edson, pg. 1, col. 1:
There are two sides to everything, as the pancake turner sagely remarked, and that would apply to the current controversy over the efficiency of wartime railroad operation.

16 December 1973, Northwest Arkansas Times (Fayetteville, AR), “There’s More To Fishing Than Meets The TV Eye” by C. A. Scroggins, pg. 9C, col. 1:
There is another side to a pancake, and here are a few examples of things that can go amiss.

But on that final day, is it really a matter of whether we know Him or believe we know Him? I propose that the answer is yes, it is important that we know Him. However, there is another side to that pancake.

But there’s another side to that pancake, as Bill Parcells likes to say.

If the wide receiver isn’t getting open, the quarterback must be very judicious about when to target him and look for other options whomay be defeating coverage.

The other side of the ELD pancake
GEORGE & WENDY SHOW Wendy Parker |December 22, 2017
So we’ve heard a lot about things going wrong with ELDs this week. Lots of crashes and system overloads, confusion and consternation. It’s been a rough week for some, but just like Dr. Phil says, “There’s always another side to the pancake, no matter how thin it is.”
