“There is no data center on Earth that’s worth the bees, water, and trees”

“There is no data center on Earth that’s worth the bees, water, and trees” is a saying that has been printed on many images. The saying means that data centers come at a cost to the environment, and this high cost is not worth it.

“No data center on Earth is worth the loss of bees, water, and trees.”
And honestly, it is hard to disagree.
Technology matters.
AI matters.
The internet matters.
But none of it matters more than the living systems that keep the planet alive.
Bees pollinate food.
Trees clean the air, cool the land, and protect wildlife.
Water is not a luxury.
It is survival.
So when people talk about building bigger and bigger data centers, the question should not just be:
How powerful will it be?
It should also be:
Where is the water coming from?
What land is being cleared?
What wildlife is being pushed out?
Who pays the environmental cost?
Progress is not real progress if it destroys the thing we all depend on.
A smarter future should not mean fewer forests, fewer bees, and less clean water.
Build the technology.
But not at the cost of the planet that makes life possible.
