“The worst advice is free advice” (“The most expensive advice is free advice”)

Financial author Robert Kiyosaki, of the “Rich Dad” website and series of books, wrote in Rich Dad’s Retire Young, Retire Rich: How to get rich and stay rich forever! (2002):

“As rich dad often said, ‘The most expensive advice you can receive is free advice. It is advice from your friends and relatives who are not rich and have no plans on becoming rich.’”

“The most expensive advice is free advice” means that following bad advice—and losing money—could make the “free advice” very expensive. Friends and relatives might be trusted on other matters, but if they’re not financially educated, their “free advice” is worth nothing.

“The worst advice is free advice” is another form of the saying. However, free financial advice (from The Motley Fool or from CNBC, for example) is not necessarily bad and highly paid financial advice (from Goldman Sachs, for example) is not necessarily better. The second part of Kiyosaki’s writing explaining the “free advice”—“It is advice from your friends and relatives who are not rich and have no plans on becoming rich”—is usually left out.

I would recommend reading anything by Robert Kiosakie (sp??) particularly his books Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Cashflow Quadrant. Be VERY wary of any advice you get on here (including mine haha) as the worst advice is free advice because it is usually wrong.

A great quote from Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad; “The worst advice is free advice often from relatives or other poor people.”
