“The world needs ditch diggers, too” is a line from the film comedy Caddyshack (1980):
Danny Noonan: I planned to go to law school after I graduated, but it looks like my folks won’t have enough money to put me through college.
Judge Smails: Well, the world needs ditch diggers, too.
Lacey Underall: [to Danny] Nice try.
There are many similar statements that pre-date and post-date this famous line. “The world needs ditch diggers, but, honestly, wouldn’t you rather serve the world in some higher capacity?” was a 1923 Rotary International advertisement telling people to stay in school. “But the world needs truckers, too” was cited in 1989.
