Wikipedia: Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises is a harbor cruise company in Manhattan, New York that operates tours of the New York harbor from its base at Pier 83.

History
Circumnavigation of Manhattan became possible in 1905 with the construction of the Harlem Ship Canal, the first regularly scheduled trip being the Tourist captained by John Roberts in 1908.

On June 15, 1945 Frank Barry, Joe Moran and other partners merged several sightseeing boats to form the Circle Line operating out of Battery Park.

In 1955 it began operating at its current Pier 83 location. In 1962 it bought the famous and venerable Hudson River Day Line.

29 April 1947, New York Times, pg. 55:
The Circle Line, which has been running a sightseeing cruise around Manhattan Island since April 5, said it intended to operate as many as five vessels by midsummer. Trips around the island will be augmented by charter voyages and moonlight sails.

8 July 1947, New York Times, "Boat Trips on City's Many Waters Provide Outings to Dreamy Places" by Meyer Berger, pg. 27:
The Circle Line operates oil-burning yachts in Around-Manhattan Cruises that last three hours each, with lecturers pointing out highlights. This trip takes you under all the bridges, through Harlem River, East River, Hudson River and New York Bay. The trip costs $2, including tax. (...) This is the best way to see New York City, particularly the waterfront and the ocean liners.

25 March 1982, New York Times, pg. C18:
