“The Costco sample lady called spanikopita ‘spankopedia’ and I’m still disappointed…”
“Spanakopita” is a Greek spinach-cheese pie. It’s an unusual name, and is sometimes jocularly spelled “spankopedia” (like “spank” and “Wikipedia”). Some people are then disappointed that the dish does not involve spanking.
“Just saw an ad for frozen ‘spanakopita,’ which I read as ‘spankopedia’” was posted on Twitter by Teresa Ortega on November 6, 2009. “Little niece trying to tell us we’re having spanikopita, not so hot with the pronunciation. Our new favorite food name: ‘spankopedia’!” was posted on Twitter by Ellen on May 8, 2011. “The Costco sample lady called spanikopita ‘spankopedia’ and I’m still disappointed it turned out to be a spinach thing” was posted on Twitter by 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸’𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 🍁 on April 14, 2023.
Wikipedia: Spanakopita
Spanakopita ( /ˌspænəˈkɒpɪtə, ˌspɑː-, -ˈkoʊ-/; Greek: σπανακόπιτα, from σπανάκι spanáki ‘spinach’, and πίτα píta ‘pie’ ) is a Greek savory spinach pie. It often also contains cheese, typically feta, and may then be called spanakotiropita (Greek: σπανακοτυρόπιτα “spinach-cheese pie”), especially in northern Greece.[citation needed] In southern Greece, the term spanakopita is also common for the versions with cheese. A version without cheese and eggs is eaten during religious fasts throughout Greece.

I don’t always pronounce words correctly. Yesterday was “spankopedia”, my version of spanakopita. Close enough! According to #AncestryDNA I’m only 2% Greek. I tried!! #FridayFeelings #TGIF #Foodies

One of the greatest moments of my teenage years was the time my family was at a Greek restaurant and the guy at the table next to us ordered “Spankopedia” instead of “Spanakopita”.
