The Championship Track (Belmont Park nickname)

The Belmont Stakes is the last race of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. Belmont Park advertised in June 1987 that it was “The Championship Track.”

“The Championship Track” has been trademarked, but for Homestead-Miami Speedway—not Belmont Park.

Belmont Park has also been called “Big Sandy.” The Belmont Stakes has been called the “Run for the Carnations” and the “Test of a Champion.”

Wikipedia: Belmont Park
Belmont Park is a major Thoroughbred horse-racing facility located in Elmont, New York, just outside New York City limits. It first opened on May 4, 1905. It is typically open for racing throughout May and June and into late July, and again from late September through late October.

It is widely known as the home of the Belmont Stakes, regarded as the “Test of the Champion”, the third leg of the Triple Crown.

History of Championship Track
Belmont is known as “The Championship Track” because almost every major champion in racing history since the early 20th century has competed on the racecourse—including each of the 12 Triple Crown winners. Along with Saratoga Race Course, in Upstate New York, Keeneland Race Course, in Lexington, Kentucky, Churchill Downs, in Louisville, Kentucky, and Del Mar and Santa Anita racecourses, in Southern California, Belmont is considered one of the elite racetracks in the sport. The race park’s main dirt track has earned the nickname, “the Big Sandy”, given its prominent overall girth.

As an aside, the byproduct of such a vigorously sought prize might have been on display this week at Belmont Park where, for a second straight time, Capote failed to win his “non-winners of 3” condition, giving up without a fight although two furlongs remained in a sprint that required 1:23 4/5 to complete. Unless something is wrong, champions never are permitted to stop trying. In any case, it was no way for “The Championship Track” to open its doors.

Named for the illustrious Belmont family, the track has seen many exciting races since it opened in 1905. In addition to the eleven Triple Crown winners, Belmont Park has hosted legends of yesteryear—such as Man o’ War and Nashua—and modern-day superstars like Curlin and Rachel Alexandra. In addition to the Belmont Stakes, the track is home to other important races, including the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the “Met Mile,” and it periodically hosts the Breeder’s Cup. Since the Belmont is always the final race, this is where Triple Crowns champions are born—hence the racetrack’s nickname of the “championship track.”
